How to tell what wall you have
Knock: if it sounds hollow, it's usually plasterboard on studs
Look at the drill dust: grey is concrete, white is plaster and red is brick
If the drill barely moves without hammer action, it's concrete — you need a hammer drill
Older buildings also have aerated concrete and plastered brick
The right drill bit and plug
- Concrete: hammer drill, masonry bit and concrete plugs.
- Plasterboard: plasterboard plugs. Heavier things, like a TV or a kitchen cabinet, are best fixed to a stud behind the board.
- Brick: brick plugs. Drill carefully in hollow brick.
- Aerated concrete: plugs made for aerated concrete.
How much a plug holds is printed on the packaging. Choose one that's too strong rather than too weak.
Where not to drill
Straight above, below or next to sockets and switches — that's where cables usually run
Through the bathroom's waterproofing — holes there can let moisture in
If you hit metal in concrete it may be reinforcement — move the hole
If you're unsure: use a detector or let someone with the right tools do it

💡 Common questions about drilling in walls
What drill do I need for concrete?
A hammer drill (or rotary hammer) and a masonry bit. An ordinary drill driver is rarely enough for concrete.
How much weight can a plasterboard wall hold?
It depends on the plug — check the packaging. Fix heavier things to the studs behind the board.
What if the drill hits metal?
Stop drilling. In concrete it's often reinforcement, so move the hole a little.
Do you bring a hammer drill?
Yes. Our handymen bring a hammer drill and everything else needed, and screws and plugs are included. You see the price right away when you book a handyman.
