Wall: the safe choice
We always recommend fixing the curtain rail to the wall. The fixings sit firmly, and the curtains stay up year after year even when they're drawn back and forth every day.
Put the rail a little above the window. That makes the window look taller and the curtains cover the frame.
Ceiling: when there's no room on the wall
Curtains from the ceiling give a tall, airy look, and ceiling mounting can be the only option when the window goes almost all the way up or a moulding is in the way.
On the ceiling, the fixings carry all the weight straight down. We're happy to help with ceiling mounting when the wall won't work, but there we can't guarantee the fixings hold in the long run.
How wide the rail should be
- Let the rail go a bit beyond the window on both sides — so the curtains can be drawn fully aside
- Measure the window and add room for the curtains when they're open
- The rail can be cut to length — we help with that
- Have the rail and curtains at home — or let us help buy them
