White sheets on a bed

How often should you wash your sheets, and at what temperature?

A good night's sleep is essential for your health and well-being. And clean, fresh sheets play a big part in good sleep. But how often should you wash your sheets? Which temperature is best? Here are some tips to help you take care of your bedding.

How often should you wash your sheets?

How often you should wash your sheets depends on how much you use them and how much you sweat during the night (we're all different!). Generally, sheets should be washed once a week to stay clean and hygienic (at least once every two weeks). But if you suffer from allergies or sweat a lot at night, you may need to wash your sheets more often, perhaps as often as every two or three days.

Washing your sheets often is especially important if you share a bed with someone else. Sharing a bed can increase the risk of transferring bacteria and viruses. That's why you should always wash the sheets after someone else has slept in your bed, even if they only slept there for one night.

How do you wash your sheets?

The recommended wash programme for sheets depends on the fabric they're made of. Generally, you can wash cotton and linen sheets at 60 °C and silk sheets at 40 °C. However, it's important to follow the care label on the sheets, as some materials can be damaged or shrink if washed at too high a temperature.

Here are some tips for washing your sheets the right way:

1. Sort the sheets by colour and fabric

Don't wash coloured and white sheets together, as the colour can transfer from the coloured sheet to the white one. Also avoid washing different materials, such as linen and cotton, together, as fibres can shed onto each other.

2. Use the right amount of detergent

Too much detergent can make the sheets stiff and unpleasant to sleep on, while too little can mean the sheets don't get properly clean.

3. Avoid using fabric softener

Fabric softener can make sheets feel soft and smell nice, but it can also reduce their absorbency. It can also damage the fabric and make it less durable. Some fabrics, such as linen, are particularly sensitive to fabric softener.

4. Dry the sheets properly

Tumble dry the sheets on low heat or hang them on a drying rack to avoid shrinkage. Make sure they're completely dry before putting them back on the bed.

5. Change your bedding regularly

Changing your bedding regularly is important to keep your bed clean and fresh. That doesn't just mean sheets, but also duvet covers and pillowcases. Change these regularly too, at least once a week, to minimise the risk of allergens and bacteria.

Extra tips for a top-notch bed.

1. Use a mattress protector

A mattress protector helps protect your mattress from spills, sweat and allergens. It can also extend the life of your mattress by reducing wear and tear.

2. Air your bed

When you wake up in the morning, pull back the duvet and let the bed air for about 10–15 minutes. This helps reduce moisture in the bed and makes it less attractive to allergens and dust mites.

3. Vacuum your bed

At least once a month. This can help remove dust and allergens that have got stuck in the bed.

In summary, it's important to take care of your bedding to get a good night's sleep and keep your bed clean and fresh. Wash your sheets regularly, use the right wash programme and avoid using too much fabric softener. Also change your bedding regularly and use a mattress protector to protect your mattress. By following these tips, you can keep your bed in top condition and enjoy a good night's sleep every night 😴.
