How do you clean your sofa?

The sofa, that magical gem in your home. It gets used often and a lot, mostly for relaxing and entertainment. But over time, a sofa can collect dirt and stains, which can make it less attractive and less lovely to sit in. Cleaning a sofa can be a challenge, but with the right technique and products you can easily restore it to its original condition.

Step by step: how to clean your sofa the best way

Step 1: Vacuum the sofa

The first step is to vacuum the sofa to remove loose dirt, dust and hair. Use a soft upholstery brush to vacuum the whole sofa, including cushions and every nook. This prepares the sofa for a deep clean.

Step 2: Use a suitable cleaning product

Choose a cleaning product that suits your sofa's fabric type. Most sofas have a care label with information about which type of cleaning product is safe to use. If you're unsure, contact the manufacturer or a professional cleaning company for advice. Most cushion covers can be removed for washing, but check whether they can be washed in an ordinary washing machine at home or need dry cleaning.

Step 3: Apply the cleaning product

Apply the cleaning product to the sofa with a soft cloth or brush. Don't rub too hard, as that can damage the fabric. Make sure to cover the whole sofa, including cushions, all corners and edges.

Step 4: Rinse off the cleaning product

Once you've applied the cleaning product, rinse it off with a clean cloth dampened with water. Wipe away any remaining moisture with a dry cloth.

Step 5: Dry the sofa

Let the sofa dry completely before using it again. Open a window or use a fan to help it dry faster.

Extra tip!

To avoid stains and dirt in the future, consider using a sofa cover or a fabric protection spray to protect your sofa. As a preventive measure, you can also clean your home more often – not least vacuuming under and around the sofa, but also mopping floors and cleaning other surfaces to stop dust and dirt from spreading to the sofa.
