Looking for office moving?
What you pay when you move yourself
Van hire and fuel — often for a whole day
Moving boxes, packing materials and maybe a hand truck
Your own time, and your friends' — often a whole weekend
The risk: damage to furniture, walls and your back is on you
What you get with movers
Movers who carry, load and drive — you don't need to lift
Liability insurance under BOHAG 2010
The RUT deduction: you pay half the labour cost
Packing, move-out cleaning and storage in the same booking if you like
The RUT deduction narrows the gap
With movers, the work — packing, carrying, loading and the time for transport — qualifies for a 50% RUT deduction. If you hire a van and move yourself, there's no work to deduct. So compare the movers' price after the deduction with what the van, materials and your time cost you. See price examples by size.
Insurance — what many forget
Under BOHAG 2010, the moving industry's standard terms, you're responsible for damage caused by shortcomings in packing or disassembly you've done yourself. If the movers pack and disassemble, they take that responsibility. If you move entirely yourself, you carry all the risk — check what your home insurance covers.
The in-betweens
Pack yourself — let the movers carry and drive
Book carrying help just for the heavy things, like a sofa, piano or white goods
Let us pack the kitchen and the fragile things — you pack the rest
Move yourself but book move-out cleaning, so you skip the last step
Carrying help for the heavy things
Like a move but not a whole move — sofas, furniture and heavy lifting, with RUT.

💡 Common questions: hire movers or move yourself?
Is it cheaper to move yourself?
Not always. Count the van, fuel, materials and your own time — and compare with the movers' price after the RUT deduction, where you only pay half the labour cost.
Who is responsible if something breaks?
Under BOHAG 2010 you're responsible for damage caused by your own packing or disassembly. If the movers pack, they take that responsibility. If you move yourself, you carry all the risk.
Can I pack myself and let you carry?
Yes, that's common. You can also book packing for just some rooms, such as the kitchen.
Do you get the RUT deduction if you hire a van and move yourself?
No. The RUT deduction applies to work done by a company. Van hire and fuel don't qualify.
