The rule of thumb: one box per square metre
Count on roughly one moving box per square metre. It sounds like a lot — but you'll use them. With too few boxes you risk overpacking, which makes the boxes heavy and the contents easier to damage.
If you have lots of books, clothes or kitchen things, add a few extra. If you live sparsely, a few fewer will do.
How many boxes you need
- Studio, approx. 30 sqm: about 30 boxes
- One-bedroom, approx. 50 sqm: about 50 boxes
- Two-bedroom, approx. 70 sqm: about 70 boxes
- Three-bedroom, approx. 90 sqm: about 90 boxes
- House, approx. 130 sqm: about 130 boxes
Storage rooms, basements and attics aren't included in the living area — add boxes for them.
Pack the boxes properly
- Heavy things (books, china) in smaller boxes, light things (clothes, bedding) in larger ones
- Fill the boxes to the top so they don't get crushed when stacked
- Put the heaviest at the bottom and fill gaps with towels or paper
- Never pack heavier than you could lift the box yourself
- Label every box with room and contents — ideally on two sides
- Pack one room at a time and keep a box for what you need the first night
